Why The Next Big Pop-Culture Wave After Cupcakes Might Be Libraries

http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2010/07/20/128651136/why-the-next-big-pop-culture-wave-after-cupcakes-might-be-libraries

My favorite part of the article:

"Open to the public" means "some days, you really have to wonder about people." This is where you get the spark of an idea for TLC or somebody to do some goofball show called The Stacks, which follows a small local library through funding problems, trying to get book clubs started, whatever. When your building is open to the public, that means open ... to ... the ... public. And you know what's a little unpredictable? The public. This is where you might get your drama. (When I was in college, the information desk used to post the best questions it received, one of which was "How long do you cook spaghetti?" I suspect many libraries have similar stories.)

Butt Bush

This butt shaped bush is at the ordering station at the McDonalds drive-thru on Lee Hwy in Arlington, VA.

Ironically just as the butt bush grows, so could the butts of people who eat the fast food.

Trim the butt bush, trim the fat off your butt.

World of Disney Store

I turned the corner in Downtown Disney and then I saw the store and heard the choirs of angels.

People are having their picture taken standing within the Lego bricks at the front entrance. There was a life-sized giraffe made out of legos inside.

Disneyland!!!!!!...I mean NMC conference !!!!!!

I made it to Disney...I mean Anaheim for the New Media Consortium conference.

My flight got delayed at Reagan National and the reason was in the news.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/06/08/wwii.biplane.flips/index.html?hpt=T3

My plane to CA via Dallas was leaving the gate on its way to taxi down the runway when this happened at Reagan National. We were delayed two hours and had to stay on the plane. I missed my connecting flight in Dallas, but got on a later flight to Anaheim. With all that, I am glad the pilot and passenger were unharmed. It sure looked interesting out our plane window.

Start Pre-Conference workshops tomorrow.

The correct way to eat Flavored Ice Pops

In order to cut open and eat flavored ice pops correctly, you need a pair of scissors dedicated to cutting open the top of the ice pop.

You need a paper towel to wipe the liquid off the scissors so they don't get all sticky with flavor pop sugar water.

You need a small plastic bag to deposit your ice pop plastic sleeves so they don't get you or the place that you are sitting sticky.

On a hot summer day, forget ice cream. Give me a flavored ice pop!

Sitting with Snoopy, smiling but feeling queasy at Kings Dominion

I made a promise to my nephew to go on every roller coaster we could fit into a day at Kings Dominion, so that is why I am sitting with Snoopy, smiling but feeling queasy.

Hand Blasters

How do they work? These hand blasters are ceramic balls coated with potassium chlorate, sulfur, glue, and powdered glass. When the two balls collide, the friction between the sand causes a chemical reaction between the potassium chlorate and the sulfur. This reaction gives off energy in the form of heat and sound.

7-11 Slurpee never tasted so good

I was so dehydrated from the temperature at my job and the fact that I gave a consultation in one of the Editing Rooms and a workshop in the Multimedia Room that I needed a Slurpee from 7-11 to keep from passing out after work.

It worked for a few hours before I succumbed to the dizziness and passed out.

NIXON!

Someday when we are at our 100th president, we are all going to realize that Nixon was a political, foreign affairs genius...a paranoid genius, but a genius nonetheless.

Screen Grabs: Your Guide to Free Local Internet - Cover Story - Washington City Paper

Screen Grabs: Your Guide to Free Local Internet - Cover Story - Washington City Paper

From the article:

Georgetown University’s Lauinger Library

The best place in the area for virtually unlimited, unmonitored computer use.

The real sweet spot is downstairs. Open 24 hours most days (closed between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday nights), the basement’s Gelardin New Media Center has roughly 65 computers with a basic version of Windows; the chairs are soft, the lighting not too bright, and the computers all come with keyboard wrist pads.

Also, get ready for sensory deprivation—if you spend too much time in the windowless Gelardin Center, it will start to feel like a dungeon.
